Further to the development of a method for modelling the nocturnal ecological continuum of the Geneva basin by HEPIA in collaboration with the canton of Geneva and the University of Geneva, the confederation mandated HEPIA to take advantage of the Geneva pilot experiment and extrapolate it to the Swiss level.
By using night-time orthophotography and the three-dimensional surface model, which takes into account the topography and structure of the landscape, it has been possible to highlight the parts of the territory that are subject to light pollution, and the areas that remain in darkness.
By superimposing this model on the cantonal ecological infrastructures, it is possible to determine the location of areas of conflict, prioritise those requiring intervention and make proposals to guarantee better night-time connectivity by working on the position, orientation or even extinction of certain artificial light sources.
